An education bursary for students who grew up in care
The Public Guardian and Trustee (PGT) Educational Assistance Fund was established through a trust created in June 1989 by combining three private donations. The purpose of the fund is to help those who were in provincial care reach their educational goals.
Who can apply for an education bursary?
To be eligible for the bursary, you need to be:
- A former permanent ward of the Ministry of Social Services or
- Formerly in the continuing custody of the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) or a Delegated Aboriginal Agency (DAA)/Indigenous Child and Family Service Agency (ICFSA)
You also need to be:
- At least 19 years old
- A high school graduate or equivalent
- Enrolled or planning to enroll in a post-secondary academic, technical or vocational program
Amount of education bursary
The bursary funding ranges between approximately $500.00 and $4,000.00 per year per approved applicant. The amount available varies each year depending upon the interest gained in the trust.
Purpose of the education bursary
The bursary is intended to cover shortfalls in your funds. For example, you can use the bursary funds for:
- Fees
- Books
- Maintenance
- Transport
What the PGT needs for your application
When you complete the application form you will be asked to:
- Show you have financial need for the bursary
- Outline your education goals and how they support your career goals
- Speak to how you have been working to achieve your goals
- Attach proof of enrolment for an upcoming course or program
- Provide transcripts from the last year of school you attended
- Attach references from people who can speak to your commitment to your education and career goals

Complete the application form and add your supporting documents and send to estates@trustee.bc.ca or mail it to the following address:

The deadline for this year's application is April 15. Applicants will find out if they will receive a bursary by mid-July.
